Hot Destination: Cuba

Malecon Sea Wall

Despite being perceived as an unstructured way to live, there possesses a unique synchrony between the local people – A synchrony that keeps Havana up on her feet. It is incredible to be thrown into a city like this, especially coming from the stereotypical laid-back “Cali-lifestyle”, as the overstimulation causes you to really disregard the minute aspects that keeps the city afloat. One of these essential building blocks to the city of Havana is the Malecon Sea Wall, a 8-km wall that was built to protect the city from the elements of the earth.

Parque Almendares | Havanas’ Hidden Treasure

With no map or phone to guide us through the urban streets of Havana, we were left with only our very broken spanish to get us to Parque Almendares, the only urban forest in Havana.

Casa Blanca – Havana’s Hidden Treasure

After a long day trip around Havana and the Malecon Sea Wall, we ventured to our final destination, Casa Blanca. Only about a hundred yards away from the Malecon Sea Wall, this small town is located on the other side of Havana Bay, making it a difficult place to get to. Trying to get away from the madness of Old Havana, I did some research and found that adventuring in Casa Blanca would solve my dilemma.

Puerto Escondido XXL Swell July 2017

Puerto Escondido XXL Swell July 2017

In early July, Playa Zicatela awoke with the flurry of XXL waves holding throughout the week. Stand out sets saw 20-25 ft faces, with enough power to break someone in five different pieces. This was the first time at Puerto Escondido and I have to say it is one of the scariest waves I have ever surfed.

Davenport Abandoned Pier

Davenport Abandoned Pier

Looking out into the distance, we noticed a bunch of concrete pillars that once held some sort of structure going out into the ocean. Doing further research, I have discovered that when the town of Davenport was formed, a small pier was built to transport lumber from the hills to Santa Cruz.
